Malliron:

Hello everyone. This is Malliron, Back with. Season five. And we are kicking off with an incredible Baddie that I have had the honor of meeting. And I told her that I'm now her Baddie big sister. So without further ado I'm introducing Jaylen. So tell them a little bit more about yourself.

Jaylen:

I'm a senior in high school. I'm finishing up. The last couple months. My senior year. I'm from Raleigh, North Carolina. I'd like to say that I'm a city born country, kid. I will go to the country. all throughout my childhood and my mom's from a little town called Jackson. And I just loved the country life, But I was raised in Raleigh. Yeah

Malliron:

And I'm a country, country, girl. And being in Bunn, North Carolina. And, you know, we went to the mall and we got a Raleigh. So it was like the big city. So what do you like to do for fun? I know you mentioned that you're a senior, so congratulations. What are some things you like to do for fun when you're not in school?

Jaylen:

Through out like all of my younger years. Danced. I've Danced for my church, I used to dance like at a studio. And I've always been a Really creative kid. So like arts and crafts When I was about I wanna say 14 we had an extra spare bedroom in my house and we turned that into my craft room. So that's why I got to do that. All my crafts and all my creative things I like to do. I was just always been like a Really creative kid. So I used to make everything under the sun from cards and beads all that kind of stuff.

Malliron:

So crafty all the crafting things. I love that. It's always great to like, you start out crafting when you're younger and then continue that on because that can be like therapeutic. When you, the older you get, because sometimes life gets busy and you like stopped doing those things. So it's great that you carry those on it too. Now as you're preparing for college. So share a little bit more, how has that been like. Navigating being an entrepreneur school and also preparing for college.

Jaylen:

It can be challenging at times I have a to-do list on my phone. and literally I live by that. I put everything in there. from my schoolwork too. I also take college Classes at the local community college. So I put from that up there, I also have a job. So. My work schedule is up there. Everything is in that to do list. And I literally live by that. If sometimes it can get a little challenging, you know, just balancing everything. But I like to give myself breaks as well, so, okay, Jaylen, this is your one hour to just do nothing. Just sit on your bed, sit on the couch. Get on your phone, would you want to, because I don't want to overwhelm myself. and I have to remind myself that like, I am still a teenager. Like you can breathe. You can breathe. So yes it can be challenging, but I like it. I wouldn't change it for anything. And I really like go go getter type of person. I don't like this to sit and be stagnant. And that's why when the pandemic started, I was like, okay, what am I going to do? All right, I've done on my schoolwork. I'm just sitting in the house. I like to keep myself moving at all times.

Malliron:

I love that just being on the go, but also being cognizant of taking those moments to pause and. Just relax and enjoy life, you know, and enjoy being a teenager. So I'm glad that you had those moments of like I'm doing these things that could be coined as like adult things, but also. I'm still a teenager. So I'm going to live on my best teenage years. Yes. Um so I know the listeners like When are you going to tell us? What Jaylin's venture is well y'all it's time. So Jaylen. Let's tell the people about your incredible venture. Um that you started and you currently run

Jaylen:

I am the owner of untouchable glow organics. It is a skincare company that specializes in skincare for all skin types, Especially Sensitive skin When I was younger always have very Sensitive skin. And it'll get really couldn't use commercial anything really. And so when I got out of school for the pandemic, I was bored at home. And I was like, I started researching, like, why does these things like lotions or something? my skin itch so bad. And so I started doing research. It was like, well, all this stuff, that's in this commercial products. They're not really good for you. So I was like, well, what can I make? That will actually be good for my skin. So I learned about body butter and I created the first one. And it turned out horrible. It was crumbly. It. I said, I wasn't going to do it again. And I said, I'm not doing it again. This is just not for And then. My Mom was like, no. like this is actually kind of Good. It might be crumbling. Just try it again. You might be missing something. And that's what I did. And it worked. Okay. Well, if my skin is like this, I'm not the only one with very sensitive skin and can't use these products. So I gave myself two months. I said The first month, I will work on. formulating my products. Getting everything um buying things for it And the second one I'll work on my website my pictures. Cause I did all of that. And yeah. it started in 2020. June 1st, 2020 is when I launched my website. And now we're here. Today.

Malliron:

Oh that's exciting. So go back to what you shared. You said that the pandemic happened. You were born at home. And trying to figure out, like, what am I going to do? Because you are this go getter. And you thought about like the needs that you have. So like started with your needs and created. On this company. And also, I appreciate that you naming. The moment where I may, I found out about body butter. I wanted to like, do you want to investigate, create your own? You created it. And it was a fail or it wasn't like what you expected it to be. And your mom was like, keep going. Shout out to your mama because she's incredible. but like you kept going and you persisted and so what are moments that you had very similar to the body butter that may have like crumbled, but you were able to like continue on and persist to go back and like perfect. Your craft.

Jaylen:

Actually it was like June I say the week I launched I didn't realize that the containers I had um they were metal And it's hot outside So body butter is temperature sensitive. And so a couple of people messaged me and were like um I got I love it But it's either melted or leaked through the container. And I was like oh my goodness I didn't know what to do And so I said, okay. I have two options. I can need to figure it out or. That's the only option really. I just had to figure it out. So I learned that there were metal. Well I did a couple of experimenting metal. Well basically hitting it up faster even then the sun's just getting too hot. And so I was like, okay, good. I can change my containers really fast. ship, the people out there. Correct. Body butter and keep going. And that's what I did. And it kind of set me back I was like, oh my. gosh, What are people going to think, you know, I should have. And that's the thing about visits. I think. people always think you should have. All your ducks in a row. Every time. And it's not like that at all Yes

Malliron:

And I'm glad you named that Like you like bouncing back from that and that didn't stop you Like you said you cried a little bit but you figured it out and you continued on and I think that's a You know any listeners if you're out there like you hit that speed bump or there's a hurdle Don't let that turn you around and go back the other way like continue like Jaylen did to find. Those new containers and go from there. So when you, when you switched it to the new containers, like what was the response from your customers?

Jaylen:

Oh this is so good Like I need more

Malliron:

Yes. It was because you didn't like turn around because if you turned around, you wouldn't have had that, like them wanting more, oh, what are some other things that like you have learned? About being an entrepreneur. Uh being a black girl that has a business and also some things that you have learned about yourself over these last A couple of years

Jaylen:

I think the biggest thing is that my voice is important. I'm a very shy person And so I would my mom would just it's like you own a business. And now I do that all the time. but yeah, if people are so surprised. And I'm like, oh my goodness. Go there and I'll support. The support any way I can. It's like My voice is the reason for that And owning a business. That's the only way Your name will get out there. If you talk. if You do pop up shops and you explain the why behind your. business. Cause I learned people want to know the why behind it. And I just think that is very important to do

Malliron:

So using your voice and talking about the things that you do So I have a little story. Jaylen or mom came to the baddies retreat in December And we had this panel so her mom sat there and she asked the question about how Jaylen kind of put herself out there. Well, the next day. Um Jaylen was like partnering with folks and talking to folks and you should have seen her at the community Bazaar And like she had it she was like hustling and telling her story. it was really great to just see like even from that Friday to that Saturday where that Friday and your mom was speaking And talking about how you can put yourself out there and then that Saturday like you were on it like that was your moment to shine and you were talking about it. so how has it been like You know having those moments with your mom where she's there supporting you encouraging you but also providing a lane for you to just like amplify in your own voice Like tell us a little bit more about that.

Jaylen:

Me and my Mom we have like Like the best relationship ever And so she's always been like her and my sister both. And so it since I'm the baby they kinda do everything for me. is so when, I got it. It was like, oh, well, Jaylen. You know, you have to do things for yourself. I was like, whoa. hold on. Okay. I love that She always guides me. Like whenever, if I have a question mom, do you think this. Well, I think it's a good idea, but maybe you should do it this way. Maybe if you do it that way. Then she has expertise of her being of course older. And knowing what people her age. And I compare that to what people my age would want I want. and it just creates great products

Malliron:

So Just having her there there giving that. Initial feedback and also pushing you to say Jaylin and do it on your own girl. Like. We're not going to do it. That's really good. If you think about Jaylin Of 2019 or other Jaylen's who may not even known that this was an idea or may have an idea what are some words? Of wisdom or encouragement that you would give to them?

Jaylen:

There is room for you I think a lot of times people get discouraged from starting certain businesses because the market is over saturated or the person they're talking to about is I know you shouldn't do that Why should you do that But there is room for you in every industry and whatever your venture is and you should just do it You should go for it.And that doesn't mean it's going to be a walk in the park It doesn't mean it's going to be a straight line but it would be worth it in in if you put your all into it

Malliron:

So don't worry about the market because the market doesn't have a you As you think about your journey who are some baddies that you want to give shout out and show love to in this moment.

Jaylen:

My mom I think I work really hard and I think I have that work ethic Like she does cause just go get it wherever you want You can get it You gotta work for it was you can get it Um so I would definitely say there As you say you too. The day that um we met I was like oh my Um I'm really shy How In my corner And then it's like I saw you talking up there I was like oh my gosh I can do it too Like it's not that hard to just speak you know It just talk about your business So

Malliron:

Thank you Let's shout out to mama and me. Well as I've mentioned you know I'm always support you I'm always be there and hopefully the listeners can like wrap their arms and support around you as well. Cause we got some Jaylen like you. going to blow up Um I'm really proud of you and the work ethic that you put into it but also like you said Remembering that you're still a teen and you take those moments to pause and just you know take it one day at a time and live your best life. So I think that's another lesson as well It's like if you are Uh young Baddie you're still in school You're still navigating that and all the clubs and responsibilities and hobbies you have take time to do those Don't be fully invested in just enjoying life and taking it one day at a time. If you think about your business, in two to three years from now where do you hope to be And how can the community of baddies help you get there from the time they hit play on this episode.

Jaylen:

So two I want ugo to be Bigger than what it is I think with all of our products from my all natural deodorants my body butters to my eczema products are people not only in the United States as needed but around the world So I want to make Ugo global. And I eventually want to grow out of my craft room that I do my business in now to maybe have a store or something like that. And I say the community can help me by just spreading the word. If you can't buy then share it on Facebook share it on Instagram but then you never know who you may follow who might need something Or are you Oh I didn't have money this week but So it's just always share And make sure you help when you do get your products you repost and little stuff like that

Malliron:

Okay so world wide that's number one Number two Uh store possibly in a store Do you want your own storefront And you want to be in a store

Jaylen:

Both Yeah

Malliron:

okay Yes put It out there. Also share and follow share it with someone else So And you let people know where to find you on social media

Jaylen:

So Instagram you can follow untouchable glow organics is all on those spaces just untouchable glow organics on Facebook It untouchable glow organics with the spaces in between And on Pinterest as well It is untouchable glow organics with the spaces in And my website untouchable glow organics.com

Malliron:

Okay I'll include all of that in the notes of this episode And in closing Jaylen I like to do a Baddie benediction so not necessarily a prayer but some closing words that you want to leave the community with

Jaylen:

I would say that Business is a journey You have to enjoy all of it You have to enjoy the the bad stuff because in the end it will all work out for your good.
